HOW TO CLEAN YOUR OVEN WITH BICARBONATE OF SODA

WHAT YOU NEED
Oven
Baking soda
Water
Rubber gloves
Damp dish cloth
Plastic or silicone spatula
Spray bottle
White vinegar

METHOD
Remove the oven racks: Remove your oven racks, pizza stone, oven thermometer, and anything else you have inside the oven. Set aside.
Make a baking soda paste: In a small bowl, mix a 1/2 cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water. Adjust the ratio of both as needed until you have a spreadable paste. For me this took about 3 tablespoons of water to get the desired spreadable consistency.
Coat your oven: Spread the paste all over the interior surfaces of your oven, steering clear of the heating elements. I used gloves for this portion as my oven was pretty grimy. It helped me really get in there and coat the dirtiest nooks and crannies without having to worry about all that grime under my nails. The baking soda will turn a brownish color as you rub it in; it also might be chunkier in some places than others. That is fine. Just try to coat the whole oven to the best of your abilities, paying attention to any particularly greasy areas.
Let it sit overnight: Allow the baking soda mixture to rest for at least 12 hours, or overnight.
Clean your oven racks: Meanwhile, clean your oven racks. See the full cleaning tutorial here.
Wipe out the oven: After 12 hours or overnight, take a damp dish cloth and wipe out as much of the dried baking soda paste as you can. Use a plastic or silicone spatula to help scrape off the paste as needed. I found that the damp cloth was enough for me, but a spatula might come in handy in those hard-to- reach places.
Spray a little vinegar: Put a little vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz everywhere you still see baking soda residue in your oven. The vinegar will react with the baking soda and gently foam.
Do a final wipe down: Take your damp cloth and wipe out the remaining foamy vinegar-baking-soda mixture. Repeat until all the baking soda residue is gone. Add more water or vinegar to your cloth as needed while wiping to really get the oven clean and shiny.
Replace your oven racks: Replace the oven racks and anything else you keep in your oven, and you’re done!

Vries dan so.

Nicolette Walsh – Ek vries myne. Ek sit 2 eiers per sakkie le plat en vries. as ek net eier nodig het sny ek een van die in helfde en onvries vir so 15 minute. Hou so 6 maande sonder probleme.

Egg Storage, Freshness & Food Safety
Keep it Fresh: How to Store Eggs

Always Keep Eggs in their Carton
We know a lot of people like to throw away the egg carton when they get home and store their eggs in the little egg caddy that comes with your fridge or in a separate bowl. This may look pretty, but we recommend always storing your eggs in their original carton. Why? Firstly, the carton protects the eggs and prevents them from absorbing strong odours and flavours of other foods in your fridge through the thousands of tiny pores in the egg shell. Secondly, the Best Before Date is always visible to you so you can guarantee freshness. Lastly, eggs should always be stored with the large end up, the same way they are packaged in the carton. This helps the yolk remain centered.

Other tips for storing raw and cooked eggs:

Eggs should not be stored on the refrigerator door, but in the main body of the refrigerator to ensure that they keep a consistent and cool temperature.
Leftover raw egg whites and yolks should be put in airtight containers and stored in the refrigerator immediately. To prevent yolks from drying out, cover them with a little cold water. Drain the water before using.
When storing hard-cooked eggs, you may notice a “gassy” odour in your refrigerator. The odour is caused by hydrogen sulphide, which forms when eggs are cooked. It’s harmless and usually dissipates in a few hours.
Recommended Storage Times for Eggs
Fresh shell eggs By best before date
Leftover yolks or whites Within 2 to 4 days
Hard-Cooked eggs Within 1 week
Prepared egg dishes Within 3 to 4 days
Pickled eggs Within 1 month
Frozen whole eggs (blended) Within 4 months
How to Freeze Eggs

Did you know that you can freeze eggs? Certain kinds of raw and prepared eggs (not in their shells) can easily be frozen following these simple instructions:

Whole eggs: Beat eggs just until blended, pour into freezer containers and seal tightly. Label the container with the number of eggs and the date, and freeze.
Whites: Break and separate the eggs one at a time, making sure that no yolk is mixed in with the whites. Pour them into freezer containers, seal tightly, label with the number of egg whites and the date, and freeze. For faster thawing and easier measuring, first freeze each white in an ice cube tray and then transfer to a freezer container.
Yolks: Egg yolks require special treatment. The gelation property of yolk causes it to thicken or gel when frozen. If frozen as-is, egg yolks eventually become so gelatinous they are almost impossible to use in a recipe. To help slow this process, beat in either ⅛ tsp (0.5 mL) salt or 1½ tsp (7mL) sugar or corn syrup per ¼ cup (50 mL) egg yolks (4 yolks). Label the container with the number of yolks, the date, and whether you’ve added salt (for main dishes) or sweetener (for baking or desserts)
Hard-cooked: Hard-cooked yolks can be frozen to use later for toppings or garnishes. Carefully place the yolks in a single layer in a saucepan and add enough water to come at least 1 inch above the yolks. Cover and quickly bring just to boil. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, in the hot water for about 15 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain well and package for freezing. Hard-cooked whole eggs and whites become tough and watery when frozen, so don’t freeze them.
Cooking with Frozen Eggs
To use frozen eggs for cooking or baking simply thaw them overnight in the refrigerator or under running cold water. Use the eggs as soon as they’re thawed and only in dishes that will be thoroughly cooked. The following is a list of the recommended substitutions for raw egg.

Substitute 2 tbsp (30 mL) thawed egg white for 1 large fresh white.
Substitute 1 tbsp (15 mL) thawed egg yolk for 1 large fresh yolk.
Substitute 3 tbsp (45 mL) thawed whole egg for 1 large fresh egg
Cooking Food Safely

When preparing perishable foods, including eggs, follow these four simple steps to make sure food is prepared safely:

Clean – Wash hands and surfaces often. Proper hand washing may eliminate nearly half of all cases of food-borne illness.
Chill – Refrigerate/freeze food promptly. Cold temperatures can prevent the growth of most types of harmful bacteria.
Separate – Don’t cross-contaminate. Keep raw meat/poultry/seafood and their juices separate from one another and other food during storage and preparation.
Cook – Cook meat, poultry and eggs to proper temperatures.

Here are a few more simple guidelines to follow when preparing and serving eggs:

Serve eggs and food prepared using eggs immediately after cooking, or refrigerate and use within three to four days.
For entertaining, serve all egg dishes within two hours. Cold egg dishes and beverages should be kept on ice.
If a recipe calls for eggs at room temperature, immerse them in warm water for a few minutes.
To prevent toughness, always use moderate heat and controlled cooking times for eggs.
Don’t eat cracked eggs or eggs that have been out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.
Use a glass or metal bowl instead of a plastic bowl when making meringue. The greasy film on a plastic bowl can prevent foaming.
The egg yolk and white separate best when they are cold.
Egg whites will beat to a better volume if they’re allowed to stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before beating.
Unless otherwise specified, most recipes are written based on the use of large eggs. One large egg = ¼ cup or 4 tablespoons or 50 mL.

HOE OM BESKUIT IN N GASOOND UIT TE DROOG

Madelein Meyer Coetzee:

Dit gaan eintlik baie vinniger as in ‘n elektriese oond. Neem gemiddeld 4 ure.

Onthou ’n gasoond droog baie vinniger as elektries.

Dit droog baie vinniger as in ‘n elektriese oond.

Alexandra Aalto: First gas mark.. the lowest, for about 4 to 5 hours. This has worked for me… hope it helps.

Elsabie Templeton
Jou beskuit gaan baie vinniger in ‘n gasoond uitdroog as in elektriese oond.

HOW TO TEST THE FRESHNESS OF EGGS

HOW TO TEST THE FRESHNESS OF EGGS
1.Place the egg in a bowl of water.
2.If the egg lays on its side at the bottom, it is still quite fresh.
3.If the egg stands upright on the bottom, it is still fine to eat, but should be eaten very soon, or hard-boiled.
4.If the egg floats to the top, it’s past its prime, and not good for eating.

RAAD VIR KRAMPE

RAAD VIR KRAMPE
RAAD VIR KRAMPE
Adele Scheepers – Hi.

Cecilia Hunwick – Drink tonic water.

Was eendag by ‘n maraton gewees- nie deelgeneem nie- Paramedic gee toe die raad vir my.

Hoop jy kom reg.

Martin Roux – Eet eenvoudig net n piesang voor jy slaap! Moenie geld mors op pille nie! Piesangs is hoog in potassium!

Jesicha Carlson – Eet bietjie sout.

Debbie Charlton Cunningham – Please go and have your blood sugar tested. I was getting cramps for some time and taking all tablets recommended over the counter. Turned out that I was Diabetic and this was a warning sign.

Ek eet nie regtig soet goed nie en sout on my kos of snacks. My bloedsuiker en bloed druk is ook reg. Het nou die coke en enos probeer. Krampe darm weg.

Riana Groenewald:

Faye Abrahams: Use it as a substitute for regular vinegar in salads, caramelised onions, over chips, in marinades.
Kiti De Jager:
Chantal Grung: Take big brown mushrooms, melt some butter, balsamic vineger and garlic in the microwave, pour over the whole mushroom, add cheese on top and grill in the oven!

Philip Reineke: A rule to follow is: 1 part Balsamic to 3 parts Olive Oil.

Lorraine Mountford: I make Mediterranean roast vegetables, red onions, different colours peppers, courgettes, eggplant and cherry tomatoes and garlic drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Renee Ficq:
Ek braai gewoonlik hoender borsies in n pan daarmee, net n bietjie asyn (anders is dit baie sterk) en my olyf olie gemeng. Dit is net so lekker in n stir fry.

Beverley Fernandez: Dis baie lekker in enige stew.
Johan Röntgen: Ek sprinkel dit oor waatlemoen stukkies.

1 koppie suiker
½ koppie tamatiesous
60 ml Worcester sous
30 ml basalmic

Carla Botha: Sit so ‘n teelepel daarvan in jou souse, heerlik.

Hanli Catlin: gebruik dit in kerrie vleis geregte. Ek sit twee eetlepels kerrie, 2 eetlepel bruin suiker en so 100 ml balsamiese asyn. gooi dit by jou uie wanneer dit klaar goubruin gebraai is voor jy vleis bysit. Maak heerlike kerrie.

HANDY TIPS ON EGGS

These handy tips will help you make the most of your cooking eggs-perience!
Hard Cooking
Whipping
Storing Egg Yolks
Utensils
Recipes
How to cook…
Older eggs peel more easily than fresh eggs. Use eggs 1 week old or more for hard cooking.
To hard cook, place cold eggs in a single layer in a saucepan and cover with at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of cold water over the top of the eggs. Cover saucepan and bring quickly to the boil over high heat. Immediately remove pan from heat to stop boiling. Let eggs stand in water for 18 to 23 minutes. Drain water and immediately run cold water over eggs until cooled. This helps to prevent a dark or greenish ring from forming around the yolk. Remove egg from shell.
Add food colouring to the water when you hard cook eggs; then you can tell the cooked from the raw.
Cut a thin slice off the bottom of a hard cooked egg so that it does not tip over on the serving plate.
If you have extra hard cooked whites, fill them with salsa or other dips…they make great little dip containers. Hard cooked eggs will slice easier if you dip the knife in water before cutting.
When hard cooking eggs, if the egg cracks, remove it and rub salt into the crack, then replace and continue cooking.
To tell if an egg is raw or hard cooked, spin it. If the egg spins easily, it’s hard cooked but if it wobbles, it’s raw.
The quickest and easiest way to get egg whites is to buy Naturegg Simply Egg Whites.
An easy way to separate eggs is to place a small funnel over a small measuring cup. Break the eggs into the funnel.
Or use an egg separator, a handy device that can be purchased in any cookware store.
Egg yolks separate best when cold.
When beating egg whites, add a teaspoon of cold water for each egg. The volume increases significantly.
Add cream of tartar to the egg whites before beating to stabilize the foam. About 1/8 teaspoon to two egg whites.
Room temperature whites are easier to whip and achieve greater volume. If your whites are refrigerator cold (best for separating), you can warm the whites in the microwave. Place in a bowl and microwave uncovered for about 30 seconds at 30 percent power. Another option would be to hold the eggs, before cracking, under a stream of warm water to take off the chill.
When whipping eggs, start with a low speed and then gradually work up to the whip setting on the mixer. The lower speed stretches the protein molecules and makes the mixture more readily accept air.
When adding sugar to egg whites begin after the whites are foamy and then add 1 tablespoon at a time, beating as you slowly sprinkle the sugar in.
Check to be sure that sugar is dissolved by rubbing a bit of beaten white between your thumb and forefinger. It should feel smooth.
“Soft peaks”: are mountains of white that come up as you lift the beater up and then fold over at the tips.
“Stiff peaks” are mountains whose peaks remain upright after you lift the beaters away.
If you over beat egg whites and they’re too stiff, gently stir in 1 or 2 unbeaten whites to every 5 or 6 whites or add a few teaspoons of sugar and beat again briefly until they are smooth.
When storing egg yolks in the refrigerator, place them in a bowl, cover them with water and then plastic wrap.
To freeze egg yolks, add 1/8-teaspoon salt or 1 ½ teaspoons sugar or corn syrup to every ¼ cup of eggs.
Pans and dishes used for mixing, beating or cooking eggs should be rinsed with cold water and then washed with hot soapy water. If you run hot water on the eggs, it will cook them and make them harder to remove.
When a size is not specified assume it means Large. Most recipes are written this way.
Fried Eggs
Heat a non-stick skillet (or a regular skillet greased with a small amount of butter, margarine or cooking oil) at medium heat. Break eggs and gently slip into skillet. Reduce heat to low. Cook to desired doneness, turning eggs gently to cook both sides or adding a small amount of water and covering with lid to cook tops of eggs. Season with salt and pepper.
Poached Eggs
Pour 3 inches (8 cm) of water into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Break eggs, one at a time, into a dish and gently slip into water. Cook in simmering water for 3 to 5 minutes until as done as you like. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and drain well. Season with salt and pepper.
Eggs in the Shell
Place cold eggs in a single layer in a saucepan. Add enough cold water to cover the eggs by at least 1 inch (2.5 cm). Cover and bring to a boil. Immediately remove the saucepan from the heat. For soft-cooked eggs, let eggs stand in the hot water for 3 to 5 minutes, then run cold water over eggs to stop the cooking. For hard-cooked eggs, let eggs stand in the hot water for 20 to 25 minutes, then run cold water over eggs to stop the cooking. For easier peeling of hard-cooked eggs, tap the egg shell all over with a spoon to crack it, roll the shell between your hands to loosen it and start peeling from the large end. Hold the egg under running water or dip it in a bowl of water to help ease off the shell. Use eggs that have been in the fridge a few days rather than those you’ve just purchased for hard-cooking so they will be easier to peel.
Scrambled Eggs
Heat a non-stick skillet (or a regular skillet greased with a small amount of butter, margarine or cooking oil) at medium heat. For one serving, beat 2 eggs, 2 tbsp. (30 mL) milk, salt and pepper (to taste) together in a bowl until well combined. Pour into skillet and immediately reduce heat to medium-low. As mixture begins to set, stir eggs from sides to centre of skillet. Cook, stirring gently, until set but still moist.
Baked Eggs
Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). For each serving, lightly butter an individual baking dish or custard cup. Break 2 eggs into each dish. Season with salt and pepper. Bake, uncovered, for 16 to 22 minutes, until yolks reach desired doneness. Chopped cooked meat, diced vegetables or grated cheese can be placed in the dishes before adding the eggs.
Microwaved Eggs
Place 1/2 tsp. (2 mL) butter or margarine in a small bowl, custard cup or coffee mug. Microwave at high power for 15 seconds until melted. Swirl to coat inside of bowl or cup. Break an egg into bowl, pierce yolk with a toothpick or tip of a knife. Season with salt and pepper. Cover top of bowl with plastic wrap, turning back one edge to allow steam to escape. Microwave at medium-high power for 45 seconds to 1 minute until cooked to desired doneness. Let stand 1 to 2 minutes, then remove plastic wrap.
